Do’s and Dont’s of Getting a Tattoo

Ahhh. I remember going to get my first tattoo. I did everything I needed to do to be prepared. Many people don’t really know what to expect when going to get a tattoo for the first time. In todays post let’s go over the do’s and don’ts of going to get a tattoo.

Do Your Research and Know What You Want

While a tattoo’s artists job is to come up with amazing artwork tailored to your desire, they jobs are not to be able to touch your skin and go “Oh yes, I see it”! Your artists are not mind readers guys. You should already have a general idea of exactly what you are going to get permanently inked on your body. Do your research before-hand so you can explain to the artist exactly what it is that you want. My first time getting a tattoo, I actually printed out a picture of what I wanted the rose to look like so all my artist had to do was add bits and pieces to it. It makes the process much easier.

Shut Up About Price

Tattoos are obviously costly, anyone that has ink on their body would know so. Therefore don’t expect a really cheap price on a certain tattoo you want. If you think that a tattoo shop might be over charging you with their rates, it’s ok to go in and ask for a price quote on something and shop around. But don’t try to haggle with someone to get them to lower their fees. Respect for the artist and the shop should prompt you to accept whatever it is they are offering. Not only that, but you get what you pay for. Most of the friends that have came up to me sporting their new tat that was done by a local tat party have bragged about cheap it cost. And it was reflected in the artwork. And it definitely doesn’t look nearly as good as a professionally done tattoo that obviously cost more. That being said, if you want good art, pay good prices.

Bathe/Dress Properly

This is probably one of the more common rules of thumb while going to get a tattoo. Your artist is going to be in close contact with you for possibly hours at a time. I’m sure no one getting a tattoo would appreciate it if their artist smelled horrible and had day-old tuna salad breath. Same goes the other way around. Make sure you take care of your personal hygiene before getting a tattoo. It is also a good idea to keep in mind wearing clothes that are easily accessable to the place you are getting ink on. For example, if you’re getting a tattoo on you leg, you may want to wear shorts or sweatpants that can be easily rolled up instead of say denim jeans.

Don’t Be Under the Influence of Any Drugs

While getting my first tattoo at the Tattoo Galaxy of Feasterville Pa, I had to sign a few forms obviously of consent, and I also had to sign one stating that I was not under the influence of any drugs or alcohol. I thought to myself, “Why would someone have to sign off on that”?, but then I realized it made sense. Being under the influence of any mind altering drug while getting permanent ink on your body is never a good idea. For one because some people tend to bleed a lot during a tattooing session, and alcohol thins your blood causing you to possibly lose more. Secondly, you might end up getting something you never meant to get, and that is not the tattoo artist’s fault nor is it the shops, and I’m sure they hate getting complaints of that sort. Also, no one needs a loud obnoxiously drunk or high person in the shop, that has to be irritating.

Don’t Bring a Group of People or Kids

Your artist needs to be able to concentrate on your tattoo, and probably has a hard time doing so when there is a bunch of your friends standing or walking around. One person is fine, but a group of people is going to get bored and antsy while your getting your tattoo. Kids are also likely to get bored and require a lot of attention, and there’s most likely not going to be a playroom in the tattoo shop to send your kid to.

TIPS TIPS TIPS!

After getting my first tattoo I wasn’t properly prepared to give him a good tip. I did however make sure I gave him 10%. Now I try to make sure I give my artist at least 20% tip on what they do. Hard work goes into the tattoos your artists prepares for you, and wha they do is skill. Givning a good tip is always appreciated, especially if you are really happy with results.

That being said, there goes your do’s and don’t of getting a tattoo. Do you guys have any other do’s or dont’s? If so post them in the comments section below.

The Spider Web Tattoo: What Does it Mean?

We’ve all seen them before, countless of times again. As a matter of fact it seems that more and more these days you’ll see someone walking down the street sporting a spider-web tattoo on their elbow, hand, neck or other part of the body. But what does the spider-web tat really mean? Besides, “I’ve been to prison”.

One of the most common places to see this piece of ink is usually on the elbow. And the most common explanation for this is that its rooted in deep racism. As noted by the Anti-Defamation League, this particular area of where the web tat rests was worn by convicts in prison to symbolize the killing of minorities just to be able to wear it. White supremacy gangs would wear this tattoo as basic proof that had killed a minority. Which would also explain the stereotype that white men that have been to jail have this tattoo for that reason. Many people also believe that this tattoo represents jail time in general however, and that the rings are numbers of years spent in prison, and has also been known to mean murdering an enemy or being associated with drugs. One worn on the left elbow specifically means “stay away” and warns the passerby that this person is most likely packing a gun with them. The Russian Prison System also has a set of meaning for this tattoo. Usually in this culture it is placed in between the thumb and index or “pointer” finger, indicating drug addiction. It can also mean theif.

A common belief is that the spider-web’s tattoo meaning has been watered down over the years, and that in today’s modern culture, it has a variety of different meanings to different people. Of course, I am a firm believer in that a tattoos meaning can only defined by its wearer, and that there’s no need to create general meanings for what is otherwise creative art. So let’s explore some of the other common meanings.

Hard Times

A lot of times if you see a spider-web tattoo with a fly in the middle of it, this symbolizes some sort of struggle you’ve gone through in your life that has been hard to overcome. Those who have had a struggle with alchohol or drug addiction are likely to have this design.

Sailor/Navy Spider-Web

The spider-web on the elbow also has the meaning of a sailor awaiting to go home so much, that a cobweb has formed from him leaning on the side of the boat. Pretty sad when you think about it, but this meaning still resonates with many people today.

Web of Fate

Not typically the better known meaning, but the spider-web has been known to symbolize being “caught” so to speak, in life’s fate it has chosen for you. Known to be popular with bikers and biker gangs.

Feeling of Being Trapped

The spider obviously spins his or her web not only to lay eggs in, but obviously trapping its prey. The contents of their web are known to be incredibly strong. So strong you might even have a far of getting trapped in a life-size one some day! So to the meaning of this tattoo can symbolize someone being trapped in a situation, or life or some place you don’t want to be in. Maybe even like a social or political situation.

Recent And Popular

Many people now a days, especially famous entertainers like musicians or even actors, have been known to sport this tattoo simply because they like the look of it. The spider-web does have an intricate beauty to it, and most times people will get one inked somewhere on their body because they genuinely appreciate the look of it, or think its “cool”.

No matter what the spider-web tattoo has been famous for before, its clear that its meaning has evolved over the decades, and is determined by the person who wears it just like any other tattoo.

“Our bodies were printed as blank pages, to be filled with the ink of our hearts” – Michael Biondi

My obsession with tattoos has always been prevalent. As a lad in love with art, tattoos to me were a symbol of artistic expression you could wear on your body forever proudly, and that thought has always appealed to me so much.
